I like books.
If you like historical fiction:
Mara, Daughter of the Nile: Spies, spies, and more spies. Egypt in its glory., and a bit o’ love.
Treasure Island: Jim Hawkins gets caught up in pirate mischief, and Robert Lewis Stevenson writes page-long sentences.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond: One free-spirited girl has to move in with her Puritan family. She of course, wreaks havoc, and all her naysayers reference Salem under their breath.
If you like fantasy:
Perelandra: My favorite guy (C.S. Lewis) writes an epic sci-fi fantasy that’s as scary as heck.
The Thief: Playful banter. Tom-foolery. One fabulously created fantasy world.
The Hobbit: It feels like you should already have read this book. But if you haven’t, get going. I like it better than The Lord of the Rings trilogy, because there’s a lot less talk of the history of the grasslands of Rohan and why or why not this or that tree is historically significant to Middle Earth.
If you like poetry:
Mary Oliver: She’s the poet for our generation. She’s a great place to start if you’re just getting your sea legs in poetry.
Edna St. Vincent Millay: She makes you want to re-write all your first dates as poems. “Afternoon on a Hill” is one of my favorites.
Tennyson : My favorite is “The Sailor Boy.” It’ll get you up in the morning, ready to face danger whatever it may be.
